In all the many many many articles in the papers, I have only seen one so far  that carries that “gone to Melbourne” story.

9 Dec 1865 Newcastle Guardian etc

Charged with being a lunatic,  (discharged)
Elizabeth Middleton still living with him then.

He certainly generates interesting column inches!

I don't believe he is the John Black who died in Hexham Workhouse. Please see this extract from Newcastle Chronicle of 24 Nov 1890.

Also, to back up the probability that he left for Melbourne, courtesy of Joseph Cowen MP is taken from the Northern Monthly Chronicle in March 1891.

Thank you all for your kind support regarding my ancestors, John Cain and Elizabeth Simpson. Does anyone have any idea why I cannot locate a death date or burial site for Eliza Robson Simpson (1891 Census 13 Mary St, Winlaton) please?

Yes, that’s the article I read.

The ones that say he was John Cain / John Black who died in 1879 were written in 1879 only a week after that man’s death.  So seem more credible to me.

And there is that 1839 occurrence of John Black as Whisky Jack referenced earlier

Have you ruled out the 1895 Elizabeth Middleton death?    Hexham again.  From Morpeth Asylum

Thank you, I've ordered a death certificate for Elizabeth Middleton for 1895 in Morpeth. Many thanks for the prompt.
