I meant to say, searching newspapers at BNA with the term “The Limes, Orsett”, the school ads are the earliest items, and the theft of sixpence is the most recent.

Reply #4 mentions that in 1901 the resident farmer, John Hepburn was born in Orkney.

Looking at the 1839 tithe map, although the alignment with later maps is a little wonky, I think that site is:

Owned and occupied by Ansons Charity: School House and Garden

I wonder if this is the smaller building on the corner, rather than The Limes?

29 August 1851: Chelmsford Chronicle
Quote

VALUABLE FREEHOLD ESTATE,
ORSETT, ESSEX.
TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION,
By S. Collier.
At the George Inn, Orsett, on Thursday, September 11th, 1851, at Two o'Clock in the afternoon, by the direction of the Trustees,
A Freehold Brick and Tiled residence, substantially built, known as the "School House," pleasantly and well-situated by the road-side, near the church, at Orsett, lately used as a school house for the education of children under the late Mr. Anson's charity, and also as the residence of the schoolmaster. The residence comprises two sitting-rooms, a back kitchen, &c., and two bed-rooms, all of good size, and a small piece of garden ground, enclosed in front of the house; together with a small garden behind, and enclosed by a brick wall, and is rendered particularly valuable to tradesmen, as affording a desirable situation for a shop. Particulars and Conditions of Sale may be had at the George Inn, Orsett; Bell, Hordon-on-the-Hill; the Inns, at Stanford-le-Hope; of William Wall, Esq, Solicitor, Brentwood; and of the Auctioneer, Romford.

Post Office Directory 1855 has for Orsett:
Quote
There is a Wesleyan Chapel, and Anson's Charity school for boys, to which have been added the National schools for girls and infants.

and lists:
Quote
Read Jonas, schoolmaster Anson's &c. National school

Does "added" mean physically added, or another school in the town? Jonas Read’s entry makes it sound like a single establishment so perhaps The Limes was an extension to the original school?
