Trying to find Maescammed Hall, Gwyddelwern
« on: Thursday 20 July 23 10:48 BST (UK) »
Trying to find where Maescammed Hall was (or a picture if there is one out there!)

My great grandfathers cousin was living there in 1891 with her husband - they were John Wright Crosby and Margaret (nee Gardham)

They were not there very long as JWC dies in Liverpool in 1896 and Margaret moves off to Leeds.

Thank you  :)

hmmmm....yes very possible! Thank you  :)

Just some sketchy spelling on the census ;)  the writing is really clear that its a 'c' rather than a 'g'

Highgate Farm is on the same page as the Crosby family and its not too far away from there.

the c would possibly be mutated to a g in Welsh - it flows better. The trick with Welsh is  to say it.

Cammed can meam crooked or bent. I gather that the roads there are rather bendy (Wiki) so Maes-gammed would mean crooked field.

There are a few mentions in newspapers over the years, including this marriage notice:

"BALL-CROSBY - On the 9th inst., at the Parish Church Okehampton by the vicar, the Rev. F. Wilberforce Saulez, assisted by the Rev. C H S Bowers and Rev. A Helps, Mark Whiteway Ball, youngest son of W Ball, JP, Walmer House, Torquay, to Edith Mary, youngest daughter of the late J W Crosby of Maesgammed Hall, North Wales."

Thank you for this and for the photos - my googling skills were lacking in finding anything about the Hall at all  ;D

Yes, Edith was his youngest child from his first marriage
