Also, if I find this Frederick Matthes - I am trying to understand whether he is the father of a Rosa Matthes born in 1912. Frederick was not married to the mother, but the name is stated clearly on the birth certificate of Rosa, together with the profession of Engineer. This did make me wonder whether he joined the Royal Engineers but I haven't found anything yet. I am not very skilled at searching the National Archive yet. Thanks, Karen.

Karen, what a nightmare  ;D

Do you have a copy of the divorce between Rosa's mother Elsie and her husband Horace?  If not then you should get it as they are usually very detailed and should give you more information about the named father of her child.

Even though the name and occupation do not match exactly, do you not think that the boarder in 1911 is the likely culprit?  People didn't always tell the whole truth when registering births.

Thanks Debra. I have ordered the copy of the Divorce Papers from the National Archive and am eagerly awaiting news. With respect to the Lodger, Alfred - yes I have wondered if he is the culprit but I can't find any other trace of him either. I then wondered whether he introduced Elsie to Frederick which is also possible.

The descendants of Elsie and Frederick - were told most definitely that they were cousins to my family in Gorleston on Sea which I do believe. Just which Frederick/Alfred is proving difficult to determine.

Thanks, Karen.
