GRO Marriage Search Options
« on: Friday 21 July 23 11:19 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the marriage of Jenkin Davies & Margaret Davies in the Aberayron district (yes I know, two Davies's in Wales...). I can't find any parish records for the period, but there are two possibles in the GRO index for 1855 and 1857, although the first has four possible brides for Jenkin and the latter has two.

I could ask the GRO to do a "one year either side" of 1856 search at £14, but what would they do if both are Jenkin & Margaret? Or will they stop the search once they find one and send me that? The other option is to take a guess (I'd probably go for 1857) and if it's wrong take the £11 hit (or is it a £3.50 admin fee if either of the names don't match?).

Any advice on the best way to do this to maximise chances of success? FWIW it tool me five attempts (three at the old full price and two yesterday using the new £2.50 option) to get the correct birth certificate for Jenkin & Margaret's daughter Elizabeth...

1855 - Jenkin Davies (widower - Weaver) married Mary Pryse - FindMyPast has the images.  Margaret Davies married William James.  Place - Henfynyw.

Jenkin's father was named as John (deceased).  Margaret's father is named as Jenkin - Weaver  :D

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Ah thanks, mine's almost certainly the 1857 one then. Jenkin was a merchant seaman. The marriage probably took place in Llanllwchaiarn or New Quay.

John

Hi John,
Yes, I've been stuck for many years, but the new £2.50 birth certificates have allowed me to take more chances; I got Elizabeth's on the second hit yesterday after three failures over the years at full price and David and Magdalen on the first attempts today (I found the existence of those two initially on census returns, Magdalen just today). It appears that Magdalen had two illegitimate children, the first when she was 14.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any parish records online for New Quay (or I just haven't found them yet).

Elizabeth is my wife's great grandmother. I knew that Elizabeth married Edwin Poole and that Elizabeth's father was Jenkin Davies and that he was a seaman. I believed that her mother was Margeret from a process of elimination, and have now found the birth certificates of Elizabeth (b1863) and her siblings David (b1861) and Magdalen (b1872). I expect there will be others too, although none appear on the census returns so maybe not, or they died young.

Steve.

I’ll take a look at it. Where is the record held?
