My Grandmother was a servant in Scotland
« on: Friday 21 July 23 15:38 BST (UK) »
Hia folks,

I'm wondering if someone has a subscription for the 1921 Scottish Census and can help me.  My Grandmother was Annie Morris (1900-1986) Born Chelmarsh, Shropshire.  She's in the 1911 England & Wales Census living with her parents William and Elizabeth in Bridgnorth, Shropshire.

My Mother says her Mom went up to Scotland as a Servant.  I have been on a Scottish genealogy website, and it appears there's a number of Annie Morris's aged around 20-22 in Scotland at this time.

Would anyone know if "my" Annie was amongst these please?

Thanks

There are 8 hits for Annie Morris age 19-21 in the census. There is no subscription at scotlandspeople, it is a pay-per-view site.

Ok, I've paid for 30 credits, to find each Census I view is worth 6 credits!! So I've viewed 2 and neither are right ::)

Is there a way I can add her Birthplace as that might narrow it down?

Just a thought but it would also depend how old she was when she went as she might not have been there at the time of the 1921 census.

I looked for a way to include place of birth before my original response, but couldn’t see how to do it.

Hi - there is no option to search the 1921 Census using place of birth on Scotland's People.

There are 9 Annie Morris aged between 19-22 on the Census. Two have middle initials. Annie B and Annie R. One is an Annie Jane Morris.
I looked at the ref. no for each Annie Morris.

Then, searching the name Morris in each area for all 9 women - 6 of the Annie Morris appeared to be living with other people called Morris (they all shared the same ref).
Three, listed below, do not appear to be living with anyone called Morris.

Looby :)

I have no idea what age she went there, all I know is that I cannot seem to find her in the 1921 England & Wales Census on FindMyPast (I have not subscribed, but you can do a basic search)

Thank you for your help.  "My" Annie Morris was born in Shropshire, and I noticed all of those were born in Scotland.  It's frustrating you can't search with a place of birth.

I have no idea when she went to live in Scotland, but it would've been before she married my Grandfather in 1928.  You're right, it doesn't look like she was in Scotland in the 1921 Census.  Nor can I find her in the 1921 England & Wales Census on Find my Past (I've only done the basic search as I've not subscribed to it) though she could be living with another family?
