Tragic Annie Entwistle nee Lynch
« on: Friday 21 July 23 17:22 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help me. One of my ancestors was Annie Lynch - she married my direct relative Abraham Entwistle who turned out to be a really unsavoury character. Abraham was in and out of prison for increasingly horrible and stupid crimes but still they got married in Oldham in 1907 when she was 24. They went on to have 4 children, Abraham b.1909, Mark b.1910, Annie b.1911 and Theresa who was born in the Workhouse in 1912. Abraham junior died in the workhouse in 1912.

While they were in the workhouse Abraham was in prison, this time for neglecting his family.

After her son died in the workhouse I can find no record of Annie or the children again (and nothing of Abraham senior either). In the workhouse record Annie's next of kin is listed as her sister 'Alice Wright or Brinkway, one day away from Stockport'.

I can see from the wedding record that Annie's father was Thomas Lynch but I have no information about her before the wedding.

I wondered if anyone could help find more information about her, in particular if she got away from Abraham and found a better life.

Thanks, Luke

Could her sister Alice be listed as of Brinksway which is in Edgeley on the western side of Stockport (where my aunt used to live)??  :-\

I'm not allowed to say too much due to copyright restrictions, but the daughters do appear on the 1921 census as foster children living in Stockport, Cheshire. Their mother is described as dead on the return.

I'm wondering if she is the Annie Entwistle whose death was registered in 1918 in Stockport, Cheshire. The age seems correct. Would be very sad.

This looks like Annie on the 1891 census (I recall that you have Anc*):

There is a sister called Alice.

Then an Alice Wright at 69 Brinksway in 1911:

I found the same info as QueenoftheWest. Perhaps worth adding that the 1921 entry indicates institutional foster care since there are two staff (head and assistant foster mother) and 23 children only one of whom is a boy (aged 3).

Also: in 1921 Abraham Entwistle is an inmate of HM Prison Cheetham.

A minor fact: Abraham Enwistle enlisted in 1915, but was soon discharged as medically unfit. He gave his wife's name as Annie Lynch of 14 Oxford Street Widnes.

25 October 1899: Manchester Evening News

Quote
A ROUGH'S APPRECIATION OF MAGISTERIAL LENIENCY.
At the Oldham Police Court to-day, Abraham Entwistle, a well-known Oldham rough, was charged with disorderly conduct. Sergeant Anderson said that on the previous night the prisoner knocked a man down in West-street, and only left him when the police appeared. He ran away declaring he would have —— well doubled the man up only for the —— police.

Prisoner asked the magistrates to be as lenient as possible, as he had only just come out of gaol. He was a brick-maker, but had not been working for more than three months, as he had not been out of gaol for a week at a time. On being fined 5s. and costs, or seven days, he executed a small step-dance in the dock.

Thank you AlanBoyd, Queenie & Kay99,

I'm glad to hear the daughters survived. I will aim to get the death certificate when I get paid.

Alanboyd, I imagined he was a lovable rogue for a while but he lived off prostitution and neglected his family, the more I find on him the worse it sounds.

Thank you all, I'll search for the 1921 census when the opportunity arises.

Great help as ever.

Luke
