Poley Surname
« on: Friday 21 July 23 22:22 BST (UK) »
My 5x Great Grandfather Robert Nicholson married Elizabeth Poley in Hull Yorkshire in about 1830.
According to the censuses the birthplace of Elizabeth is in Hull about 1797.
There are a family of Poleys in Suffolk in the 1700s but none in Yorkshire at that time.

Can I safely assume Elizabeth wasn't actually born in Yorkshire but was born in Suffolk.  There is an Elizabeth Poley who was born in Suffolk in about 1799 which could be her but not too sure.

Not sure about Elizabeth's birthplace, however the marriage appears to be:

Robert NICHOLSON and Elizabeth POLEY 11 Oct 1819 at Sculcoates.

I think the image may be on findmypast (I don't have a subscription), it would be interesting to see if it is indeed POLEY. There are certainly families of PALEYs in Hull at the right time. Spelling was very fluid. Since you have multiple census records with her birth as Hull, I would be hesitant to think it was somewhere else.

Modified to add:
Though, looking at the 1841 at Middle St, Myton (Kingston upon Hull), if I have the right family, it has Elizabeth Not born in county.  :-\

Robert NICHOLSON   50    S   (mariner) - though I guess this should be "F" for foreign parts ie Nova Scotia
Elizabeth                      30    no
Mary                            20     yes
Ann                             15      yes
William                          6      yes
Robert                           5      yes
Maria WATSON             1      yes

The image on FindMyPast clearly shows as Poley - Elizabeth made her mark.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks for the replies.

I have seen the 1841 census which you speak of on a number of occasions but I never noticed it said Elizabeth was NOT born in the county of Yorkshire. A fresh pair of eyes always helps.

Thanks again

She may have married at Littleport, Cambridgeshire in 1814  :-\

It looks like the Elizabeth POLEY who married Martin CARNEL at Littleport in 1814 is in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 at Walpole st Peter (widow). Her birth place looks like Ely, Cambridgeshire. They baptise a number of children at Walpole St Andrew.
