Miriam FAULCONER 1865-1953
« on: Friday 21 July 23 23:22 BST (UK) »
Miriam Mannington FAULCONER was born in Hellingly, Sussex, England in Nov 1864. On 5 Oct 1893 at Hamilton, Ontario, she married Alfred CLARKE.

Trying to find when she arrived in Ontario, either directly from England or via the US.

She may have been accompanied by her older sister Ellen Mary FAULCONER born 1861. If they came in via the US it is likely to have been New York as their younger brother Percy FAULCONER was living there by then.

Also trying to find when they left to return to the UK.

Alfred and Miriam left the UK in May 1894 for New Zealand, so before then.

Thanks

Both sisters Ellen Mary and Miriam Mannington Faulconer are still in England 1891 census.

Miriam  married Alfred Clarke 3 October 1893 in Wentworth Ontario.

So she went between census of 1891 (visiting with a Lewis family in Isle of Wight) and October 1893.

Did she know Alfred Clarke in England and followed him to Canada?

Alfred Clarke was in the Royal Navy if I found the correct person his service record is at the National Archives.
Free if you sign in for an account.

He resigned 18 February 1891, he was in trouble to say the least his last ship was "Caroline"

Thanks amondg.

Don't believe they knew each other as it was a love at first sight romance. They got engaged three days after meeting each other and married not long after that.

The sisters were on holiday, more than likely went to New York to see their brother Percy and from there up to Niagara Falls. They did have an older cousin living in Peterborough, Ontario which is just around the end of the lake from Hamilton so may have visited her as well. Cousin was Annette Dover.

Alfred and his brother Harry were at Waterdown, just north of Hamilton.

Yes marriage should be 1893 not 4.

Thanks again amondg, your second post crossed with mine.

Yes that is the right Alfred, have his records. He must have left England not long after that with his brother. Can't find them leaving or in 1891 UK or Canadian census.

The only entry I can see is for 17 July 1891 to Canada

Mr. D Faulconer  (it's definitely a D and not a P) - might be an error!
Miss Faulconer
Miss M Faulconer

all are single.

Then again if they were on holiday and Miriam and Alfred married quickly it seems it should be a trip beginning  in 1893

Do you have the will of his father Beaumorice (sp) Stracey Clarke ?

He died 13 September 1897 at Essendon Hertfordshire. Probate to George Clarke and Rev. William Walpole Clark.

It may give some clues as to who is where etc.

ADDED

What is it with the Clarke family putting an ocean between them and family to get married.
Henry Trevelyan Clarke 23 of Waterdown Canada married Rosetta Caroline Nona Bodily  of Little Boxted? England in New York 24 February 1892.
He is back in England with wife and children for 1901 census
Emigrated again 1903 to Winnipeg Canada ref: 1906 census 1911 census and still there 1916 and 1921.

Yes I do have BSC's will. No mention of Alfred.

Henry was the brother in Waterdown with Alfred. Rosetta arrived in NYC on the 24 Feb, so they were married the same day.

Quite a few of that family married in places other than England. George was married in NYC, William Walpole in Australia, a sister in NZ, another brother in India. They got around a bit.

Percy left the UK aboard the Etruria on 7 February 1891 bound for New York.  Interestingly, the outgoing record for the three Falconers later in 1891 don't have a matching incoming record into Canada even tho it says that the ship was bound for Montreal.  I've checked several thinking it was mis-indexed and not coming up with a match.

There is an A. Clarke, noted only as an adult, who arrives in Canada aboard the Circassion out of Liverpool, on 21 June 1891, noted as a labourer, bound for Hamilton.
