John A Norris Caithness family census
« on: Saturday 22 July 23 01:46 BST (UK) »
Can't locate John A Norris on the census. He was born in 1827 to John and Catherine Norris (Sutherland)in Caithness. His family were of the Summer Walkers. He never learned to read and write but was one of the wealthiest men in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1854 he married Metis/Cree Marie Kayattowe in Fort Pitt, Saskatchewan. Anyway, I am trying to find out about his siblings and all that as I know about his life in Canada. He had a sister that move to the US. I think her name was Katherine but not positive.

Actually he was baptised in 1832. The attached is from the index to baptisms at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk where you can also view the original documents at modest cost.

His parents were married in Wick on 4 July 1823.

Do you know when (t)he(y) emigrated? Because I don't see him or any of his family in the 1841 census index at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hello , I stumbled upon this thread while looking for someone else. These are my family , I actually live in caithness and can go back to Peter Norris Birth ABT. 1740 • , Caithness, Scotland my 6th great grandfather. Wasn't very easy as they were tinsmiths as you said and travelled all over, so I think I've got it right.
Mary Norris my 4th great grandmother , her daughter Catherine was left pregnant by an orcadian who was born in the Hudson bay and slunk back there  , his father too took on a metis wife and left a family in Orkney.

I do recall my dad talking about his great grandfather as being a "summer walker" before he came to Canada.
As soon as I saw summer walker I knew then that you are kin! Hello cousin from Yellowknife, NWT, Canada, land of the Auroras.
