When you do locate a record and it says an event like a birth took place in Pilton or anywhere else  in Somerset. That is where the registration took place not the actual birth.
Would anyone know of a website that shows all the villages & settlements around any town in Somerset.?  This would be such a big help to everyone I'd be very surprised if there is not something on the web that would show and name these places. If you know of any such website please post the URL for all to see.
Thanking you all.
Geoff

I'm not entirely sure I understand exactly what you are after. The UKBMD website is my go to for finding out which towns and villages were in which Registration District.
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/REG/index.html

There you can find an index of Districts
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/REG/districts/index.html

and an index of Place Names
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/REG/places/index.html

Maps are another good source - National Library of Scotland have a fantastic collection free to view on line

You can find the information via Freereg too - locate the event - click on the name of district, which opens another page which gives a bit more information about the registration district. There you will see a link which opens in a new window to UKBMD which gives more details. Unsure if it is quicker to find it via Maddy’s links or via freebmd.

Also consider Genuki page for Somerset:

https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/parishes

Wikipedia lists the Hundreds of Somerset and the parishes included in each hundred.

Historically Somerset was divided into 40 Hundreds
See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Hundreds_of_Somerset.

The GenUki page for Pilton (using your example) has a description:
PILTON, a parish chiefly in the hundred of Whitstone, but partly in that of Glaston-Twelve-Hides, county Somerset, 3 miles S.W. of Shepton-Mallet, its post town, and 5 S.E. of Wells.

Pilton was chiefly in the Registration District of Shepton Mallet, but over the years various "bits" were transferred to and from Wells Registration District.

(I was born and bred in Portbury Hundred! Just to confuse things, there is now a road called The Portbury Hundred. ;) )
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

As a rough guide, the main registration districts were originally based on the Hundred for that area, and the registrar would often be located in the local market town of that Hundred. Things changed over time as populations grew or reduced, but I have always found it good starting point, outside the large cities like London or Liverpool etc.

Added. I see that KGarrad and Little Nell have made substantially the same point.
