Missing Parents
« on: Saturday 22 July 23 11:19 BST (UK) »
I'm looking into the parents of ELIZABETH MATTHEWS. According to census records she was born in Birmingham some time around 1855.

She married Edward Charles Preen on 25th December 1875 in Aston at the age of 21. On the marriage certificate her father is listed as Thomas Matthews (labourer) and she is living at the time in Lichfield Road, Aston.

She is found in census records with her husband and children in 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911. Each time her place of birth is listed as Birmingham and her date of birth ranges between 1854 and 1856.

I'm struggling to find her pre-1881 to be able to trace her parents.

On GRO, when looking at births in Aston, there is only one Elizabeth Mathews listed (spelt with one T) born in 1854.
Elizabeth Mathews - 1854 - S Quarter - Vol 06D Pg 185

No mother's maiden name is given. There is a death record for an Elizabeth Mathews (spelt with one T) in 1871 and this Elizabeth died aged 18. It could be the case that she was the Elizabeth born in 1854 and is therefore accounted for.

In Birmingham, GRO lists 6 Elizabeth Matthews records that I would need to try and check out. These are as follows:
Elizabeth Matthews - 1853 - M Quarter - Vol 06D Pg 116 (No mother's maiden name)
Elizabeth Matthews - 1856 - D Quarter - Vol 06D Pg 159 (Mother's maiden name SINER)
Elizabeth Ann Matthews - 1856 - S Quarter - Vol 06D Pg 87 (Mother's maiden name WILSON)
Elizabeth Isabella Matthews - 1854 - M Quarter - Vol 06D Pg 60 (Mother's maiden name LICHFIELD)
Elizabeth Jane Matthews - 1857 - D Quarter - Vol 06D Pg 142 (Mother's maiden name POOLE)
Elizabeth Maria Matthews - 1857 - J Quarter - Vol 06D Pg21 (Mother's maiden name ROBERTS)

Can anyone help me find Elizabeth pre-1881? I was hoping to find her in census living with a father Thomas, but I've not managed to find this.

Possible rabbit hole here.

Looking at the 1881 census Edward and Elizabeth have 3 children

Elizabeth Jane Preen  born dq  1876 mmn Matthews
Charles Edward Preen born dg 1878 mmn LEWIS
Edward James Preen born mq 1880 mmn Matthews

A possible birth of Elizabeth

LEWIS, ELIZABETH       mmn BAYLISS
GRO Reference: 1855  M Quarter in BIRMINGHAM  Volume 06D  Page 71

1861 census

Joseph Bayliss Head widower 66
Jane Lewis 29 widow
Elizabeth Lewis 6 Birmingham

A John Lewis married Jane Bayliss dq 1853 Birmingham

That's fascinating!

The Elizabeth Matthews records I found on GRO all seem to be accounted for except for the one without a mother's maiden name - though 1853 is possibly too old to be my Elizabeth.

I'd not spotted the Lewis connection there so I'll definitely look into this.

Sadly not your Elizabeth. This Elizabeth's mother Jane remarried a George Rolfe . They appear together in 1871 census with Elizabeth as Lewis, and 1881 census with Elizabeth still as Lewis by which time your Elizabeth is married to Preen.

Yes, I've just found the same thing.

Back to the drawing board it seems.
