Perhaps the naming pattern of the children of Samuel and Eleanor would give a clue.  First son John 1825 and daughter Eleanor 1827  ??

First son – named after the father's father. First daughter – named after the mother's mother. Second son – named after the mother's father. Second daughter – named after the father's mother....

Thank you Sandra. As you mention this, my number one most likely couple to be Samuels mother and father are a John Leighton (b.1783) and Eleanor Whitehead (b.1781), which sort of fits the naming pattern that you suggest, but no evidence for this whatsoever other than circumstantial. And they didn't marry until 1811, 5 years after Samuel's birth. Could that be why he is not mentioned on any documents?  So frustrating that I can't pin them down!

Did wonder if John Leighton had married previously but there are no other likely siblings for Samuel.  Even the spelling of Leighton, Leyton, Layton etc did not show anything.
Maybe the father did not remarry for a number of years  :-\

Samuel was born in Kendal - at least that is what is documented in various places so must be what he thought at least. With no references to parents anywhere, and no birth record, is it possible that some parish records in Kendal were lost at some stage?
