John DARRAGH death 1895
« on: Sunday 23 July 23 05:42 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for a death certificate. According to N.S.W. newspaper he died on board Mariposa in 1895.
Is it because he died on a ship that no death was recorded in NSW.
How can I find information on ships death log etc. like what he died off.

The Daily Telegraph (Sydney, NSW : 1883 - 1930)  Sat 14 Dec 1895
DARRAGH.—Died on October 10th, on board
Mariposa, John, beloved son of John Dar-
ragh, Waverley. Deeply regretted. R.I.P.
Ora pro him. Melbourne papers please copy.

Thank you Jane

I believe the Mariposa was a New Zealand registered ship, but I can’t see John in the NZ death register.

You can follow its movements here

S.S. Mariposa, sailing from Sydney 30 Sept, 1895 and Auckland on 5th Oct 1895, and arriving at Port of San Francisco, Oct 25, 1895.

May be buried at sea. I wonder if his death was registered in the USA?.

I can't see him as a passenger. Was he crew?

Hi,
Neale, I wonder if the list you have offered there is made up of only those who are intended immigrants to US.

This other list from the SMH, lists those mentioned on that list, plus others by name

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/109884273?searchTerm=%22mariposa%20%22

I note the very last mention is for 13 members of an entertainment group Brough and Boucicault who were to disembark Auckland. These are not named.

However if he were one of them, his death at sea would not be after the ship's departure from Auckland.

Sue

There was another death on Mariposa. Most likely got a write up because of who he was.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/108081952

I was hoping there may have been an article about the ship when it arrived saying how many died on the journey but havent found one on the Maripisa.

Maybe the San Francisco Newspaper might have an article noting any deaths on the ship but for now the only one i could find was on the same fellow on the above link. NOTE buried at sea. I can't get the whole article as it's a paid site. https://sfexaminer.newspapers.com/

According to the opening post, he died on 10th Oct. That is 5 days after departure from NZ.

There are a few mentions of Mr DANE's death in American newspapers, they don't mention other deaths on board eg:
https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn82016413/1895-10-17/ed-1/seq-4/#words=mariposa%2Bdeath%2BMariposa%2Bdeath    (3rd column, middle)

Also lots of talk about cholera in Hawaii, however the Mariposa appears to have been given a clean bill of health
https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn87060190/1895-10-25/ed-1/seq-1/#words=mariposa%2Bdeath%2BMariposa%2Bdeath   (2nd column, near the top)
(again, no mention of deaths on board.)

Here is an article that mentions 2 deaths on board the Mariposa, but doesn't give a cause, again, talking about cholera.

Yes
I think I mis-typed there and intended my implication to be that he could not be one of that group ::)
