Here is an article that mentions 2 deaths on board the Mariposa, but doesn't give a cause, again, talking about cholera.

I didn't read this article properly, it continues below the picture of the US consul general Ellis MILLS. It says the other death at sea on the Mariposa was of John GREEN, the butcher's assistant, died from inflammation of the bowels on the 11th Oct and buried at sea. Major DANE died of heart disease, and was buried at sea.

No mention of John DARRAGH - was GREEN an alias? Or does the death notice have some wrong information about the ship or date?

Thanks Maddys52 for the link, I did the same not looking further down the page. Interesting my notes have John Darragh's occupation as a Butcher so perhaps they mixed up the surname.? The only info I have on his death is the article in Trove.

Another mention in an Hawaian newspaper, also says he was John GREEN.

Interesting that your man was also a butcher. Sounds like it should be the same man. I wonder if there is a crew list available anywhere.
