Duncan McGilvray & Margaret McAllister
« on: Sunday 23 July 23 16:49 BST (UK) »
Afternoon all,

Could anyone help me find details on Hugh & Maragaret who married in, I think, Glasgow?  Both were born in about 1843 (Hugh's roots being, I'm told, in Uist and Maraget in Ireland).

They seem to have settled in Glasgow where it appears they had 10 children between 1862 and 1886.

Any thing would help!

Cheers,
Windy

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk can be used to establish when & where they married - 1863 & he was Duncan  ;D

1871 shows he was b Glasgow & Margaret Ireland.

Are you sure you have the right person if you have been told he was b Uist?  This Duncan’s  parents were Charles & Janet nee Bowie

As CaroleW has said, 1863:

 MCGILVARY
DUNCAN
MCALLISTER
MARGARET
1863
644 / 7 / 272
MILTON

and as a way of double checking, birth records of any of the 10 believed children, should also record where and when the parents married.

Hi CaroleW & Scotmum,

Sorry for my error at start of this post!

Duncan is the man I'm after (Hugh McCalister McGillivray was his son, and spelling seemed pretty fluid).

Is the 1863 a reference to their marriage?  What does the rest mean, are the register numbers?

Also, what was the tradition of the double surname (I assume it was mother's surname followed by father's surname)?

The marriage is what is returned on Scotlandspeople website indexes. It costs £7.50 for 30 credits, and then 6 credits to view each B/M/D or census entry. The marriage record should confirm names of both their parents.

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/buy-credits

Hugh's birth:

MCGILVARY
HUGH MCALLISTER
MCALLISTER [mmn]
M
1870
644 / 8 / 2002
ANDERSTON

McAllister being a middle name, not a second surname.

1851 shows both parents were b Argyllshire.  Charles in Mull approx 1822 & Janet in Islay approx 1824

Use the OPR’s on SP to find their births which will give both parents names

SP is not a subscription site - it’s pay per view but the index is free

All Scottish censuses except 1911 are available on Ancestry.  If you don’t have a subscription most local libraries have free access

Modified comments in red.

Transcriptions (often garbled) of All Scottish censuses except 1911 and 1921 are available on Ancestry.  If you don’t have a subscription most some local libraries have free access.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Brilliant & thanks everyone!

Will check out the SP site!

Am I correct in assuming that Charles was a McGilvray (or atleast variation of that surname)?  Slowly inching toward South Uist ...
