"Poor" written after a baptism entry
« on: Monday 24 July 23 09:18 BST (UK) »
Good morning,

I have come across the word "Poor" written after some baptism entries in an 1800-1812 baptism register.

Can you explain the significance, and/or the specific reason why Poor was written after an entry.

Regards,

Janet

Possibly implying that the family did not have the money to pay for the baptism.

Thank you for your reply Emeltom.

I would tend to agree with you, however, so far, I have found two farmers, a schoolteacher and a local landed gentleman declared as poor!

There is no fee for baptisms.

As an aside, I have several entries in my tree from a parish register in Lincolnshire, although I would have to dig out my records to find out which parish it concerned. However, the vicar apparently disagreed strongly with the imposition of taxes, to the extent that he marked every single parishioner who happened to be subject of an entry in his registers during the period, as poor. My ancestor, denoted as poor in several baptism entries for his children during the period, later left a will in which it was apparent that he was anything but!
