Interestingly, there is also a baptism for a Thomas ELPHEE, with mother - Philadelphia (no father), at Rolvenden on 8 April 1810.

Btw, I think John REEVE's death was in 1861 (not 1871 as in your subject title), aged 74 (Dec qtr, Romney Marsh 2a/466). Buried at New Romney 7 Dec 1861.

OK.  Its getting a bit Dickens now.

My John Reeve I have as being born/baptised in 1812/1813, so may out of wedlock?, to John & Philly.

They (J & P) then have atleast 2 other children, and then Philladelpe dies (maybe in child birth, who knows).  John then remarries and another branch starts.  Pretty sure my John is the son of J & P as he has a daughter in c1836 called Philliadelph.

The detective work is what is so interesting!

I though reaching 80 was a bit of an achievement back in the day.  Thanks for this extra info!

Possible death for 2nd wife Mary Ann REEVE at New Romney - burial on 18 Jun 1836, aged 43. (son Henry was baptised a couple of months earlier, 43 is oldish, but not too old to be having a child, if this is the right Mary Ann)

In my resaearch on Suffolk's mill I noticed that sometimes people got baptised years after they were born, and in one case about 7 children got baptised on one day.  I think it saved money.

Not say that this is the case here though. :)

There is an indenture involving property in New Romney dated 19th October 1812 that mentions John Reeve the younger, cordwainer, of Rolvenden.

Interesting.

I wonder if there was a relation between Joseph Dobell (in the above indenture) and Mary Ann Dowle (John Reeve's second wife), the surnames look different enough to different families, but sound similar enough that a not very literate person might write the as same name (?).

Hum, not sure if I made myself  very clear.
