James Henshaw of Stamford Lincolnshire
« on: Tuesday 25 July 23 03:30 BST (UK) »
Hello.
I am looking for a possible birth record for James Henshaw born about 1775 or 1776.

He married Elizabeth Merton/Murton/ Minton on 28 Feb 1798 in Barnack which is only a few miles from Stamford.
He was the publican of the Exeter Arms in Water Street Stamford until his death on 16 June 1831. The death notice in the Stamford Mercury said he was 55 and that fits with family papers. He was buried in St Martins   graveyard in Stamford Baron. We have all his children and extended families but his death is a brick wall of over 40 years. His daughter became the publican, probably about the time of his death.

I long ago found a James Born in 1775 in Weston-upon-Trent in Derbyshire but recent research indicates that he died on 29 Feb 1776 so that was a dead end.We have no idea if he was born in Stamford or came from somewhere else.

Any clues would be appreciated by his descendants.

Thank You.

Franands

Best to use the "report to moderator" button and ask for the thread to be moved to the Lincolnshire Board. I'll do that now for you.  :)

You probably know this already - I realise it doesn't mean he was born there, however the marriage banns say James HENSHAW is of this parish (ie Stamford Baron) and Elizabeth MURTON of Barnack.

Thank you.

My DNA test last year connected me with several cousins in England and we are all stuck in the same brick wall with no place of birth.

Have you checked the local archives to see if he left a will?

Or perhaps when he applied for a license?

I notice from the baptisms of his children he was a servant until Abel in 1812 when he is a victualler

The first son was named George 1798 so if they followed naming patterns his fathers name was George.

Thanks amondg.
I have searched Ancestry and Findmypast for probate records. No luck there.
I have also looked at dozens of James Henshaw records but none have a father with any of his son’s names.
I have tried to find records online of St Martins Stamford Baron and there seems to be a gap in the online records. My next step is to probably contact the Northamptonshire records office to see if they have any further records. I know this is posted under Lincolnshire as most of Stamford is in that county…. But St Martins is over the bridge on the river Welland and is in Northamptonshire. It is such a lovely little bridge that is the boundary between the two counties.
