The Probate Service only started in 1858.
Before that time you need Ecclesiastical records.

I have just proof read my original post and I said his death had been a brick wall for 40 years….
I really meant his birth, but that means I will still have to see if I can find the missing years of St Martins records that are online.
Sorry for the confusion. Brain and typing fingers not working together.
How I wish my visit to Stamford in 1995 was a serious genealogical trip.
