Grant Mount, Leeds
« on: Wednesday 26 July 23 12:34 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help in finding where this address was?

I have a family member born at 17 Grant Mount in 1908 (the address is clear on the BC).  The family have no connection to Leeds whatsoever and she was a child who was left behind in the UK when her mother, father and older sister emigrated to New Zealand.

I am wondering whether it was a nursing home or something similiar as I whilst I am hoping leaving the child behind was perhaps something as 'innocent' as they could not afford 4 fares, but the other side of me is suspicious about whether the child was the father's and she was left behind because of it.  The birth certificate itself has the mother and father on it that I would expect.

Thank you

According to FindMyPast address search, this should be the household in 1911
www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWJ1-5Q7
Address search gives address as 17 Grant Mount, Roundhay Road, Leeds schedule 232
1921 census has the Black family there.

Thank you!  Searching with Roundhay Road has pulled up a couple of references and it looks like its a normal residential house.

The baby who was left behind was fostered/adopted in the Carlisle area and appears there on the 1911 census.

I have just found her mother's Will who identifies all of her children - except this one and a son that died when he was 16 in NZ.  She declares in her Will that she has no other living children which is not correct as this child was still alive in the UK.   Lends to my suspicions that maybe the baby was not her husbands  ???

Leodis.net has a photograph of Grant Mount taken in 1953, it was probably demolished in the 1960s/70s when Leeds underwent a large slum clearance program.
