Hi. Thank you so so much for the above information. I just need to now find Joseph’s birthdate and death date. Can you help with the above please. Can’t get access to family search although I did previously and as it’s a Sunday not able to get to library to use ancestry. Hope that is not too cheeky.

FamilySearch can be used at home for free by just registering for an account.

Trish is not currently online, but I found Joseph's likely birth and death details when I was searching before, but I didn't add it to this post as I thought you just wanted general advice; I didn't want to spoil the search for you!

I cannot find a death for Joseph or Sarah Lincoln in Purleigh, which suggests they moved away.

If you search for children born to a Joseph & Sarah Lincoln post-1760 in Essex, you find:

Joseph (1762) in Purleigh
Jeremy (1767) '' ''
Edward (1768) '' ''

Then a gap of 8 years before:

Sarah (1776) in Woodham Walter.

Searching for a burial for the parents in the Woodham Walter area, brings up the following:

Joseph Lincoln, aged 86, buried on 23rd November 1813 in Woodham Mortimer. Would give him an estimated birth year of 1727.

Sarah Lincoln, aged 75, buried on 15th May 1808 in Woodham Mortimer. Would give her an estimated birth year of 1733.

I don't think there are any other Joseph & Sarah Lincolns in Essex who would fit the above other than the parents of Edward.

Thank you so much Queenie. Did you get all the above information from FamilySearch? I just can’t seem to get registered on to it. Many many thanks. Off to Purleigh, Mundon, Woodham Mortimer next Monday to explore where my ancestors came from.

I would have thought that FamilySearch would hold these records, but I had a look and I am struggling to find them on the site.

I use FindMyPast (my personal favourite website for research). It is rather expensive, but I know that quite a few people on here access FindMyPast via their local library. It looks like Ancestry hold the same records, but I find it a lot harder to pinpoint records I need using their system.

It is a shame you are going on a Monday, as I was going to suggest heading down to the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford (not too far from where you ancestors were), but they are closed that day.

Hi Queennie.
A local library near to me has a monthly afternoon session on researching your family history but I haven’t managed to get down there yet.

I did have access to familysearch but my login wouldn’t work so tried to reset last week but had a
Million e.mails asking me to reset but want able to. Think they have now blocked me.

Are you able to research further back for me please?

Thanks for the suggestion of Chelmsford records office. What other info would I get from them?
Thank you so so much.

Thanks for the suggestion of Chelmsford records office. What other info would I get from them?

From their site:

"You can use the Searchroom computers to consult a range of resources, such as Essex Archives Online, Ancestry, Find My Past and British Newspapers Online to which we subscribe. Staff can help you access and use these sites.

If you order original documents, they will usually take 15-20 minutes to arrive.
"

I was just thinking that you could use these resources to view the transcriptions I am referencing - and maybe view some originals - but it appears that FreeREG (the site Trish mentioned) holds a lot of the Essex transcriptions. It is completely free with no registration required:

Here is Joseph's burial:

And Sarah's:

I was hoping their marriage witnesses would provide clues, but they unfortunately don't share a surname with either Joseph or Sarah:

There are no obvious baptisms for Joseph, so any suggestions would be more of a theory.

Assuming that Joseph's age at death is accurate within 5 years and that he was born in Essex, there are these baptisms:

(1722) Joseph, son of Joseph & Sarah Lincolne in Great Burstead, Essex (likely died in infancy)
(1724) Joseph, son of Joseph & Elizabeth Lincolne, in Great Burstead, Essex (likely died aged 3)
(1731) Joseph, son of Edward & Abigail Lincoln, in Ingatestone, Essex (maybe?)

Hard to be certain, unfortunately.

For Sarah, I quite like this baptism:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01sjk/

The father is Jeremiah, and Joseph and Sarah did have a son called Jeremy, which is not a common name. Also, the parents seem to have married in Woodham Mortimer and moved back there by 1738.
