HMS Ajax 1807
« on: Thursday 27 July 23 16:04 BST (UK) »
Hi.
I have been chasing down George Coysh for several years now. He was a Devon man 1781-1840 and all local documents in circulation and in our museum say that he fought with Nelson at Trafalgar but he is not listed anywhere not even at the archives in Kew. I had decided that it was just a local legend until I found a handwritten letter from his grandson in the Devon archives yesterday talking about his grandfather's service on the HMS Ajax, describing in detail his narrow escape in 1807 when the Ajax caught fire in the Dardanelles Operation and even how his grandfather's Trafalgar medal had been given to his mother but an aunt had taken it. The detail is pretty compelling since when the letter was written in 1924 the grandson still lived in the same street with siblings and others who had these family memories.
Kew hasn't been able to help so can anyone please tell me where else I should look to see if George was really on the Ajax.
Many thanks
Alison
