Roots Magic to Family Historian
« on: Thursday 27 July 23 16:35 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone
I seem to use two programmes from time to time, Roots magic 9 and Family Historian, as I can never make my mind up as to which one I prefer.
I haven't touched either for a while, and have just put a lot of information onto Roots magic, but having looked at Family Historian again, I think it is easier to navigate my way round.
My question is, I seem to have gone completely blank as to how to transfer information from RM to FH, without manually inputting everything.
Please can I have the step by step version. ;)
Many thanks
Gill

If it were me, I'd create a Gedcom file in Rootsmagic. Save it and import the file into Family Historian.

I do this occasionally to transfer my trees from Ancestry to Family Historian.

Gill, just make sure you look for an "error import log"  after you do the transfer.

Because no genealogy software program is 100% GEDCOM compliant, there is the danger of losing varying amounts of data every time you transfer between programs.

If you have the time, read at least this article https://genealogytools.com/replacing-family-tree-maker-part-13-importing-your-ftm-tree-into-family-historian-6/ which is part of a series of 20 excellent articles about moving trees between different programs. It's a few years old and some programs would have improved but others have got worse; however the principles involved are still highly relevant.

In fact it's probably better to choose a program based on its GEDCOM compliance rather than any bells and whistles some like to parade. Fortunately, Family Historian is one of the better ones in this regard.

Thank you Peter, that's very useful advice. Will have a read of the article. I think it might be sensible for me to stick to just one programme in the future, and Family Historian seems the easier one to work with for me.

Family Historian v7 can do a direct import of your Rootsmagic file (v7 or later) rather than use a gedcom transfer.

Thank you, that's worth knowing!

I have managed to import a Gedcom from Roots Magic, but your way sounds much easier.
Is it straightforward to do?

I also have both plus Reunion on our iMac.

IMO Roots Magic is superior to FH, simply that it has Tree Share with Ancestry so trees and all their associated media are copied into the software where the tools that Roots Magic has are very useful for error checking.

Plus Roots Magic has the ability to run on a USB Memory Stick which is ideal for sharing the family research with relations.
