Have you tried

https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1674847

When did birth records start in Louisiana?
Louisiana Birth Records

The only birth records that are currently available at the Archives prior to 1911 are from Orleans Parish. Birth records were not required statewide by law until 1918.

I am now interested in her daughter 'Dot Lee', who was born in about 1876/1878 to her second husband, Charles G Lee.

According to court papers in Dot's slander lawsuit, she was born May 28, 1876, with her father being Charles G Lee.

Another interesting article summarising the whole Rawson episode is found here.

It appears that Meckie goes off to Europe once it's all over, possibly taking daughter Dot with her, and in 1894 Dot marries Lawrence Christian Gordon in Italy.

I have now spent several days going over the 'Story of Meckie' thanks to all the help I have had here.

At some stage I have downloaded a copy of a marriage certificate between John Slaymaker and America L Smith (Meckie) dated 2 April 1866 (I think).  Looks like New Orleans, as I would expect.

But the copy is fuzzy and I have spent a lot of time trying to find the original online.  But failed.

HELP:  Has anyone else got a way to find this Marriage certificate?

And it appears they divorced, would those records be anywhere online?  She is in the 1870 census with John Slaymaker and son(s).  Newspaper report says she divorced him after 6 years , so a divorce would be 1872.

She then marries Charles G Lee in 1875 but divorced him after a year and a half.

What a story!
