Thanks. All info is potentially useful. I'll see if I can use it.

It is from Vic online indexes.  I have cleaned it up a bit as we are not supposed to cut and paste from other sites but the names are exactly as indexed.

OK, I'll have to look into that more. Perhaps I can find these missing children there. I live in Sydney, but I have been to the PRO in Melbourne when visiting - that's where I got info on Charlotte's death. There are always more places with information than I know about! Thanks.

Thanks for these comments and ideas.

Quote
This memorial notice only mentions wife and one daughter. Perhaps as expected.
That birth was for Charlotte and William Clark. I wondered if that could have been them, but there are several births to William and I can't think John got changed to William by mistake several times over. So I don't think that's them.

It is not a birth. It is a memorial notice (as stated).
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Possibly not related to this family at all, but I'm wondering who this is (can't find a relevant entry on the Victorian BDM index for birth or death) death in 1890

"Clark, on the 17th May, at 20 Young-street, Albert Park, Ilena Maud, the dearly beloved daughter of John J. and Charlotte Clark, aged 2 years and 4 months."
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/196965924

and this death in 1891:
"Clark, on the 18th September, at 49 Kerford-road, Albert Park, William Lesley, the dearly beloved son of John James and Charlotte Clark, aged 5 months."
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/193412236

Modified to add:
This is possibly the birth of William Lesley CLARK:
"Clark, on the 28th April, at 196 Montague-street, Albert Park, the wife of John James Clark of a son, Gippsland papers please copy."

John and Charlotte are buried in the Boroondara Cemetery in Melbourne,

Just as a side note also buried with them is a Jane Knight which, interestingly, Knight been the surname  which Charlotte used as a alias when obtaining the baby Henry Dwyer in 1893. I haven't been able to work out the connection yet. Just thought i would post as it might come in handy at a later date.

1287 / 1871
KNIGHT Jane
mother  Elizabeth TAMMIDGE
Father Drew James
place of birth ESSE
spouse at death KNIGHT, John Henry
aged 51

Burial

Mrs Clarke signed herself as Mrs Knight and gave a false address.

In the early days, adoptions did not involve reissuing the child's birth certificate. It was more of an informal system. The change came about sometime in the 20th century. Not sure of the date.

In Charlotte's inquest file there is a statement by a woman, Maud Holmes, who claims to be Charlotte's niece. Maud was noted as a single woman, lived at 39 Gove st Windsor. Not sure if that will help you to connect the families.

Here is the likely connection between Maud HOLMES and Charlotte CLARKE.
She states Neice of Charlotte and it appears she is, but neice by marraige.

Here is the death of Maud HOLMES.
