Montague William George Smith
« on: Tuesday 01 August 23 02:08 BST (UK) »
Hi
Desperate to find any info on the parents of Montague William George Smith born illegitimately to Helen Smith on 1 Oct 1891 in Woodspeen East  and fostered out. Have been trying to discover more for years. Everywhere I turn there are dead ends. He was baptised by his mother on the 1 Nov 1891 at St Mary’s Speenhamland. At his funeral a man my mother did not know told her she had her grandmother Helen’s nose. That’s all the info I have.

1891 has 2 Ellen Smiths living Speen - mother and daughter.

The mother is married to Joseph Smith an accountant.  The daughter Ellen is age 15 so could be the mother of Montague, have you investigated this family.  RG12/ 970 f52 p11

Thanks.
I made a typo before. His mother on the birth registration is Helen Smith not Mary.
The Flitter’s were the family that adopted him. I have no idea if they were a family connection. I have yet to find one. I will look into the Ellen. Very intriguing. Though I’m not sure how I would prove anything.

Does it say what occupation Ellen Junior had? She is listed as a domestic servant on the birth certificate.

In the 1891 census Rosie mentions, Ellen (15) is a scholar.

Rosie99, I went a different route to you, so this may be a blind alley.

Montague was baptised as you have posted 1.11.1891. His death records a dob of 19.10.1891.
His mother a single woman named Ellen.

In Berkshire between 1886-1892 there appear to be 4 births of Smiths(not including Montague) with a single mother called Ellen. These may be or not siblings to Montague.

1. Esther Martha Smith bap 1.8.1886 Grazeley
2. Ellen Greaves Smith born 2.12.1887, bap29.1.1888 Burfield
3. Florence Smith bap 17.5.1889 Reading
4. Albert Smith bap 1892 East Lockinge

Ellen GR**s Smith appears as an adopted daughter in 1901 Reading. She goes on to marry a Charles Henry Duck in 1913 and records her father as George Smith--occ--gardener.

John

Does it say what occupation Ellen Junior had? She is listed as a domestic servant on the birth certificate.

As mentioned she is a scholar age 15 on the census but by the time she gave birth she could have been working.

We just need to try and eliminate any we find.  John has found another worth looking at.

Have you done a dna test
