As for the father of the illegitimate child, I suppose we should be interested in anyone called Montague William George.  There was, in fact, a Montague William George COSWAY, born at Exeter in 1872.  In the 1891 census, he was a "Boy Copyist" at the War Office, residing at Wandsworth.  By 1896, he had moved on to an appointment at the Post Office.

That's an interesting thought, Rosie, but it doesn't sound like the right Ellen (May) Smith, who was born in Newbury reg. district in 1876 (mother's maiden name Cliffe).

It was not meant to be Ellen May Smith mmn Cliffe, I was suggesting an Ellen Smith who may have met up with Montague William George COSWAY as they were living close by in 1871

I'm sorry, Rosie.  I was assuming that the mother of the illegitimate child was Ellen May Smith, but I can see now that is not at all clear.

I made a typo before. His mother on the birth registration is Helen Smith not Mary.

Could you please give all the information from the birth certificate

I will dig up the birth certificate. It’s in a box in the cupboard.
