Inverkillen?
« on: Tuesday 01 August 23 12:20 BST (UK) »
I've just found from the censuses that Margaret Burgess, daughter of James Burgess and Janet Wright, was apparently born in Inverkillen, Ireland.

Mr Google has never heard of Inverkillen. Has anyone else any ideas

(a) where it might be

(b) why a joiner/carpenter and his wife from Moray might have gone there temporarily* and

(c) whether any baptism records from there have survived?

*Their youngest recorded children were both born in Elgin, in 1806 and 1812.

a) Enniskillen (perhaps written as Inniskillen?)
b) employment or connection to military stationed in Enniskillen barracks?
c) what religion?

I had a look to see if Bulloch had any mention of him in the militia, but no. There is a James Burgess from Boharm, but he is a mason and this is earlier on, so unfortunately won't be your man.

Ah, thank you. I'm not aware of a military connection, but it doesn't mean there isn't one.

Church of Scotland as far as I know, so could be any variety of Protestant.

I have a candidate for him, though he was baptised in 1753 so would have been (just) older than 22 in 1776.

The one who was in 'Inverkillen' was born in Rothes, about 1775.

Is she the same person as 50 year old Margaret Hendry (married husband John Hendry/Henry in 1821), living in Elgin in the 1851 Scotland Census, her birth place on the 'Ancestry' website transcribed as "Inneskile, Ireland"?

If gaffy has found the correct person them the chances of finding baptism records are slim. See PRONI's Guide to Church Records to see their holdings for Enniskillen-
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/publications/guide-church-records

There might be other records that are not held in PRONI but held other places like local custody but again chances are slim.

Probably. I don't use Ancestry.

I have now checked the original document and it could indeed be Innes... rather than Inner... so Enniskillen sounds good.

If it was Enniskillen, then note that the Tithe Applotment Books show several Burgesses in the Enniskillen area.  Yes, that's WELL after when James went to Ireland, but it just made me wonder if another possible reason he went was because he had a relative already settled there.
