Ancestor Thomas Downing in Napoleonic Wars
« on: Tuesday 01 August 23 16:58 BST (UK) »
I have my ancesor, Thomas Downing’s service record which tells me he signed up 2 Aug 1804 and served until 31 March 1817. He is listed as serving in the 2nd battalion Royal Artillery under General Ellis Walker and serving in Major C H Godby’s company as a gunner.

I am struggling to find out where the would be based / have served etc. Does anyone have any ideas? If anyone could offer any help I would appreciate it.

Thank you
Sara

You can see from the record that he spent 5 years in the East or West Indies. If that was with what became Charles Godby's company then he would have been based in Jamaica.

Army discharge papers on FindMyPast for my reference https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM%2FWO97%2F1225%2F069%2F001&parentid=GBM%2FWO97%2F1225%2F706024
