Blair Surname, Ardnaglass, County Donegal
« on: Tuesday 01 August 23 23:04 BST (UK) »
I am interested in any information regarding the Blairs of Ardnaglass. I have found some records from Ballindrait Presbyterian, but have not been able to build a complete family tree. I can go back as far as Hamilton Blair, born 1803, but I would really like to find out who his parents and siblings were. Any help or guidance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

There was a brother John, according to the Will Calendars, presumably he may be the other Blair shown at Ardnaglass in Griffith's Valuation: Letters of Administration of the personal estate of John Blair late of Ardnaglass Castlefin County Donegal Yeoman deceased who died 5 December 1880 at same place were granted at Londonderry to Hamilton Blair of Ardnaglass Farmer the Brother of said deceased.

http://www.willcalendars.nationalarchives.ie/reels/cwa/005014896/005014896_00032.pdf

There was a Martha Blair who died in 1879 at Ardnaglass at a reported age of 78, maybe married to one of your Blairs, the informant present at death was a Sarah Blair of Ardnaglass:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1879/06507/4873860.pdf

The Tithe Applotment Books show an Adam Blair in Ardnaglass, the date reference was 1826:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01sjy/

There's also the following reference:

November 28 1826: At Cooley, on Thursday, MR ADAM BLAIR, formerly of Ardnaglass [Co. Donegal], in the parish of Lifford, aged 86 years

https://www.cotyroneireland.com/surnames/blair2.html

BTW, on Hamilton's wife's side, an 1839 announcement of their marriage described Jane Lowry as the youngest daughter of Mr. James Lowry, of Binion. (same webpage as above)

Thank you all for responding. I had all of the information you provided, with documentation already in the Blair tree, so it looks like I am on the right track!  I most recently found the brother of Hamilton, John, through the Will calendars and that was a great find. I just wish I knew who Hamilton and John’s parents were and if there were other siblings. I will keep searching.

Thanks for the clarity Kiltaglassan. Cloghrow is an earlier manifestation of the current Cloghroe. Same place just makes our work a little more interesting and to keep an open mind.

Cheers
Jack.
