Robert and George Coysh of Highweek
« on: Wednesday 02 August 23 09:05 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am researching George Coysh 1781-1840 who lived in Topsham. He was born in Highweek near Teignmouth and I am 99.9% sure that his parents were Robert and Dorothy. I am also pretty confident that his father's brother was Andrew and that Andrew and Robert were the children of Richard and Alice.
Of course 99.9% isn't actually proof and so I am hoping that someone may know more about the family or where to go to find out. Any help would be wonderful.
Thanks
Alison

I think it is likely his Parents were ROBERT/DOROTHY.

The reason is George/Sarah name their 1st Son ROBERT bapt 4 Mar 1813 and a Daug Sarah Dorothea bapt 1 Apr 1821.
(FreeREG)

George did change occupations.
On Marriage he is a Mariner and on Roberts bapt also. By the time of Frederics bapt 1823 he is a Schoolmaster.
So likely from an educated background.

Burial;
Topsham
ROBERT Coysh 30 Aug 1827 age 82 (c 1745)
(FreeREG)

I can also see on Census a William Coysh born c 1788 Highweek

DOROTHY Coysh Burial 6 August 1791 Highweek. (F/S.Org)
No extra details given.
If this was the Mother of George then its possible Robert his Father remarried.

If so there is a MARY Coysh buried 12 Mar 1826 Topsham age 75

Another child
ROBERT Coysh bapt 22 Jan 1778 Highweek to Robert/Dorothy
(F/S.Org)

I am probably going over a lot of what you have but posted just in case you dont have all of this :)

FindMyPast has a 1797 prisoner of war records for a "Rob or Rich Coysh, Capt and Geo Coysh, CB at Angouleme." There is no other info.

It also has an 1813 Naval Allotment record for a Geo Coysh, gunner, of the Minstrel. Allotment awarded to "wfe Sarah, to be paid out in Topsham."

There's also an item at the National Archives (downloadable free) about his will - daughter Elizabeth?

He was quite a character wasn't he. I couldn't believe how dull the book was but it was written in a tiny house with very little light in a seriously poor and slum like street which makes it pretty impressive
