Lown(d)s

I am looking for information on a William Lownds b 1780 in Warwickshire, England. I cannot find anything more on him in England buy I think he was transported to Van Deimans in 1842 after this there is nothing. Also, an Edward Lownds b in Warwickshire who was transported to Van Deimans around 1819 - its unclear whether he is brother or son to the above William- again he disappeared after he was transported. I think either both men stayed and started a new life or died either on the journey or when they arrived in Australia - any info on this would be much appreciated tia x

You can try their convict records online in Tasmania archives, these should state when they become free or if they died whilst a convict. There may be other records for them also such as marriages etc.

Quiet a few convicts once they became free headed for Victoria and other places following the gold rushes so checking other areas of Australia is worth a try also.

Trove newspapers are a great source if you haven't already tried it.

William was native to Chawley, Cheshire, aged 40.  Married, three children, wife Mary at Stockport, father John a shoemaker at native place (Chawley), one brother John, one sister Mary at Manchester.

This William went to Victoria from Tasmania in 1852.

I can't see any convicts in Tasmania that match these details.

There is also an Edward LOWNDS on the 1837 census at New Town, Hobart

and a passenger Edward LOWNDS on the Lillias departing Hobart in 1846 going to Port Philip (Sydney).

Both of these records are available on the Tasmanian Library website. Uncertain this last is necessarily your Edward though. There was an arrival in Tasmania of an Edward LOWNDES Esq around 1846.
