Royal Arcade, Newcastle upon Tyne

The 1901 Census records that one of my ancestors was living at 24 Royal Arcade, Newcastle - his occupation is shown as Manager of Public House -- does anyone have an idea where I can find the name of the public house that was at 24 Royal Arcade?

I'm looking for it in an address search but it's not listed as separate from Pilgrim Street. It was demolished in 1963.

I can remember seeing the old building in the very early 1960's, probably just before it was demolished.

I've tried Mr Google, came up with the link that you posted as well as a bit published in the Evening Chronicle. I've tried find trade directories but so haven't found anything.

There is mention of a Cleveland Arms, Royal Arcade in 1921

That list says Newcastle Library (amongst other places) have directories that span the relevant time frame. If you can get there, the library has user friendly opening hours  but one of the other venues may suit you better.

If you are lucky, one of the directories may have a public house named in the Arcade.

If you can't get there it may be worth emailing the library to ask if they would look for you.

The Cleveland Arms looks likely but there is a question in that it is recorded as 22 Royal Arcade.

The 1901 Census shows my ancestor at 24 Royal Arcade occupation of Manager of Public House. At 22 Royal Arcade was a widow called Bridget Clark (no occupation) and her daughter Bridget, a Book Binder.

The 1911 Census shows that the occupant of 22 Royal Arcade was a widow called Isobel Ellison (no occupation) and her three daughters and two lodgers. The Cleveland Arms is recorded as 13 Manor Street with a George McMinn being the Manager. 24 Royal Arcade is not listed.

The 1921 Census shows the Cleveland Arms recorded at 22 Royal Arcade. 24 Royal Arcade is not listed.

It would seem that the Cleveland Arms could have been on the corner of the Royal Arcade and Manor Street.
