Quarter Session for Thomas Scatchard, 1655
« on: Thursday 03 August 23 14:57 BST (UK) »
In English, this one :)

I have:
Quote
Greathorpe

ffor as much as oath hath been made this day in open {??} that John
Denbigh and Thomas Scatchard {su{r}veyors} for the Highwayes the past yeare
for the Division of the Hamblett of {Greathorpe} within the towneshipp
of Stainley have upon the passing of their {??} {??} {??} in their
hands this oath doth thereby{??} order that the fair Rate {??} {forthwith}
pay over the said moneys soe remaineinge in their hands to the present {su{r}veyors}
there for the use of the said Hamblett of {Greathorpe}

There are some words I can't make out at all, and some I'm not sure of. I believe that the place referred to is Greathorpe, a Hamlet neat Stainley, but which Stainley is not obvious (North or South) and I can't find the place on any map.

This is how I read it:

Wrenthropp [in margin]

Forasmuch as oath hath beene made this day in open Co(u)rt that John
Denbigh and Thomas Scatchard s(u)rveyors for the Highwayes the last yeare
for the Division of the Hamblett of Wrenthorpe within the towneshipp
of Stainley have upon the passing of their accompts xl viis vd in their
hands this Co(u)rt doth thereupon order that the said late s(u)rveyors doe forthwith
pay over the said moneys soe remaineinge in their hands to the pr(e)sent s(u)rveyors
there for the use of the said Hamblett of Wrenthorpe

Notes:
1. I would normally use square brackets to insert letters for the contractions in the original, but as this clashes with the forum's formatting codes I've used curved ones here.
2. The places are Wrenthorpe and (presumably) Stanley
3. line 4 - 'accompt' = 'account', followed by £40/7/5d.

EDIT: Actually £10/7/5d - thanks, Watson (see next post)

Arthur's transcript looks good, but shouldn't it be £10 7s 5d?

Thanks Arthurk. I can't think why I though the place was Greathorpe now. Looking back after reading your transcription it's obvious. Think it's time again for new glasses. On the first line I thought Court, but wasn't sure, and I though the fourth line contained a sum of money but couldn't quite make it out.

Anyway, one more down, and on to the next one.

Yes, of course :-[. Seeing xl put 40 into my head, and it clearly didn't want to get out again.
