Help with - WW1 Military Records re my wounded ancestor - Somme
« on: Thursday 03 August 23 17:46 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon,

I'm asking for any help with regards to finding my great Uncle Thomas Norris military records.(if available) Thomas  is believed to have fought at the battle of the Somme where he sustained wounds resulting in the loss of a lower leg. Thomas was born 14/1/1895 in Chorley Lancs but would have been living in Farnworth, Bolton when he enlisted. Thomas fortunately returned from the war and took up occupation as a watch repairer and passed in 1963.  Many thanks in anticipation.

Regards
Jayhen

Was his wife called Mary Alice? Did he die on the 31st January 1963?

If so, Thomas served in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment with the service number of 19439.

Hi,
Thomas died on 31st January 1963 and his wife was Mabel Alice. More than a coincidence i suspect. Many thanks for the information. Is there any documentation/medal records online.

Jayhen

Hi Jayhen6,

Unfortunately his service record was destroyed during the bombing of London in WW2 (over 65% of records were lost.

His Medal Index Card shows that he enlisted on the 6th January 1915 and was medically discharged on the 21st March 1917. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He did not receive the 1914/15 Star Medal which means that he did not serve over seas until after 31st December 1915.

As he was medically discharged, he was also awarded a Silver War Badge (number 164996) to wear on his civilian jacket.

Please note that both his Medal Index Card and his Silver War Badge records are recorded as Thomas Morris. However, his pension card shows Thomas Norris and his wife' s name as Mabel Alice.

I'll have a further look tomorrow to see if I can find anything else for you.

Allan

Hi Allan, very much appreciated with what you have managed to find out. Would there be a war diary or was that destroyed also?

Regards
Jayhen

His medal roll shows no Btn. identification however he is
amongst a batch of men from the 6th.
Their war diary is at TNA & can be downloaded FOC.
They were first at Gallipoli & from the start of 1916 Mesopotamia.
They were involved in many actions during that year & suffered
many casualties.
I don't know if his pension card will give an insight to confirm his Btn.
