Are there places mentioned in his military record around 1842/3?

None in the records, but until 1843 he seems to have been in Birr in Offaly. He married his Irish wife Sarah in 1842 in Birr, and then Mary Ann is recorded as having been born in Hull so I assume they moved back to the UK.

Perhaps she was born at the time of the move and her birth was not registered.

The family in the 1881 above is the same as this one in 1871 in Villa Pl, Aston, Warwickshire (note that Winifred is "imbecile" in both).

Wow, this is fantastic  . It might also help me find Sarah in Ireland, as I always assumed that she was from Offaly but now we know she was actually from Dublin. Has anyone managed to find a death date?
