Dorset Family History Society’s Monthly Meeting
« on: Friday 04 August 23 20:37 BST (UK) »
Dorset Family History Society will be hosting a talk on Tuesday 19th September 2023 at 7.30 p.m. by BRIAN BATES entitled ‘WHEN THE GERMANS INVADED DORSET’.

Brian Bates is a returning speaker with a fascinating talk looking at some local history for a change and which is something that most of us are unaware took place. This “invasion” began in August 1914 when 18 German prisoners arrived in Dorchester. By March 1919 4,500 foreign nationals were incarcerated in one of Britain’s largest POW camps situated on the outskirts of the town. Brian will take us through what life was like in the camp and how locals dealt with the extraordinary situation in which they found themselves.

Brian Bates and his wife have lived in Dorchester since 1971. His love of social and economic history was ignited by an inspirational schoolmaster and his passion for the history of Dorchester began when he wrote a thesis on the town’s seventeenth-century history. For him ‘real history’ is the story of the ordinary person and their communities. Brian gives talks on various topics, including aspects of Dorchester’s and Dorset’s rich history. He has published several books on Dorchester’s history and military biographies, and also transcribed the diary of 17th century merchant William Whiteway.
