Assistance identifying James Lees & Son business, Perth
« on: Friday 04 August 23 23:33 BST (UK) »
Hello from the US.  I am trying to validate a person/business purported to be from Perth Australia, but I think maybe from Perth, Scotland.

This is the second time I have seen a vintage pistol from circa 1850's described as being from/shipped to Perth, Australia.  This specimen has an additional evidence being a label in the storage case:

James Lees and Son
Gun & Rifle Manufacturers
63 George Street
Perth
"Shooting & fishing tackle in great variety"

Current maps of Perth do have a 63 George Street, but it is a residential area today.  I am wondering if anyone could advise how to determine if a Mr. James Lees was in Perth, Australia, and if there was an "outdoor store/manufacturer" James Lees & Sons in business between 1850-1900 period in Perth Australia?   I have searched the web, but cannot find any reference.

Thank you in advance for any advice.  Regards,

Scotland.

You can probably narrow down the dates further by searching for more years.

1832-1833, a James Lees, gun-maker, is in Perth but at a different address

By 1852 he is at 71 George Street

Still at no. 71 in 1858 but now "and son"

1866 at 63 George Street

1872, James Lees & son at 63 George

1874, Robert Lees (the and son?) at 63 George by himself

This is fantastic information and very much appreciated for all the effort and the multiple links.  It's incredible that these records are so readily available.  So unfortunately Mr. James Lees is from Scotland, not Australia, but at least I now know.   It's a shame really, as the pistol was in exceptional condition with all its accoutrements, but without the Aussie connection, I simply don't need it in my collection!

Thank you again @jorose for the research and advice.
