Baptisms at Glossop
« on: Saturday 05 August 23 14:42 BST (UK) »
Familysearch has baptisms at Glossop, such as this one (which is the one I am interested in; I believe the surname is actually Melce):

Jane Mele
Father Henry William Mele
Mother    Mary
18 Sep 1836
Event Place   Glossop, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom
Event Place (Original)   Glossop, Derby, England

Ancestry has Glossop baptisms included in their Derbyshire parish register collection - but that one doesn't seem to be in the register they have.  I have looked for other baptism records that familysearch show as being in Glossop during the 1830s, but they aren't there either.

I'm not sure that Jane's family ever lived in Glossop - she was born just over the county border in Mottram, Cheshire.  I can't find a baptism for her in Cheshire.

Does anyone know where the baptisms that familysearch have recorded as Glossop might actually have been?

This handy website has transcribed all the baptisms for Glossop for this time period:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ska/

This is how they transcribed it:

1836, 18 Sep: NIELD Jane, daughter of Henry William & Mary, address: Mottram, occupation: Plasterer

So it did take place in Glossop, but this family resided in Mottram.

Marjorie Ward, who created the web pages referred to several years ago now, did so by studying the actual parish registers (by special arrangement) at Derbyshire Record Office because the films were not high enough quality in some instances.

The hosting of the pages appeared to be under threat after Rootsweb was acquired by Ancestry in 2000 (the pages were inaccessible for a while) so Marjorie created her own web site at http://www.nwdbysources.uk/ to make sure that the information remained (and remains) available.

Ancestry obviously made the pages accessible again but I always use Marjorie's own site now.
