Mr Google says:

The 504 (Gateway Timeout) status code indicates that the server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, did not receive a timely response from an upstream server it needed to access in order to complete the request. The error may be a temporary occurrence due to too much traffic toward the server or site.

It is something most of us see, some of us quite regularly.

Basically it means that the site is too busy to cope with the traffic it is receiving. If they paid more to Amazon they could deal with the extra.

Delivering stuff to your house is not how Amazon makes most of its money; Amazon Web Services (AWS) is where the big money comes from. Netflix, for example, last had a file server of their own over a decade ago, when even its internal systems were moved to AWS.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.
