I think so, John.

More likely is the 1861 entry that Jon mentioned earlier, followed by the other entry mentioned by Jon for 1871.

1851 entry would be so helpful here  ::)

Going back to Bromborough in 1861. It's a fairly small place, with just a smattering of Kellys there in the census returns over the years.
But in 1861 there is a Margaret Kelly, 38, a servant (cook), at Hamilton Villa. Head is Frederick Croft, shipowner (as per 1861 directory)
Says she is a widow, born Northop in Flintshire. I haven't found her as Kelly before or after.

I guess it's a 95% plus chance that Margaret is nothing to do with Jessie Maria.
Maybe a tiny hope that she might be her mother, and has had Jessie boarded out in the village :-\
Desperate stuff on my part, I fear!

We think Jessie is the person on the 1861 census with Joseph and Mary Nelson. We are now looking at some clues we have had about her father William Kelly, cooper. Have found a William Kelly, cooper on 1861 & 1871 census with a wife called Ann (nee Rawlinson) and then on 1881 and 1891 census with a wife called Elizabeth. Think William and Ann had 4 children and Ann died and he married again. Was Jessie born outside the marriage. Thanks for all the help.

The marriage of William Kelly to Ann Jane Rawlinson took place on Christmas Day 1851. William showed as a bachelor at the time of his marriage. With Jessie Maria showing a possible birth year of c. 1850, does seem like Jessie Maria may have been illegitimate although she went by the surname of Kelly throughout her life.
