Unfortunately the letters that were sent from his mother seem to have disappeared. We know from his nan's other daughter that letters were sent and that either her or him sent dolls and food parcels from Canada after the war.

There was a letter sent to my MIL from her mum after her death that told her the details of her parentage but whether she mentioned any further family details I don't know. My SIL is going to have a look for this letter in the boxes of her mums things that she has but she suspects that she may have thrown it away as her mum was really annoyed with her mum for keeping this secret from her.

Sandra...I appreciate your comment but we do actually think that he knew about my MIL as gifts of dolls and other toys were sent after the war so we assume that they continued to correspond and she told him of a daughter.

He might have known but do any children he has had since know.  I agree with Sandra it is a delicate matter
