Army Vetinary Corps
« on: Tuesday 08 August 23 14:46 BST (UK) »
Hi there
I'm trying to find more information about my grandfather: Ernest Jones, born about 1891, in Corris, Merionethshire, Wales.

On my father's birth certificate, in 1920, Ernest is listed as Motor Driver (Glass Merchants), ex Private A V C.

On my parent's marriage certificate in 1941, he is listed as deceased, occupation: Motor Driver.

On UK, WW1 Service Medal and Awards 1914-1920, there are three Privates shown SE/16919/28177/31283

Is it possible to determine if one of them is my grandsfather?

Regards
Maggie

Have you located the family on the 1921 census or 1939 register

In the 1921 census, Ernest and his wife are living with his wife's family in Brislington.

He is shown as Ernest Jones, age 30, married, son in law, born in Corris Merionethshire, Wales, Occupation: (out of work) Motor Driver, for Ernest Mathews & Co Ltd, Bristol

I am unable to find a marriage certificate for Ernest and my gran - but she has taken on his name.

Ernest is known to have "left" my gran when my father was "still a baby" and didn't return.  I don't know where he went so have no other records for him. My father and gran continued to live in the family house in Brislington until my father married in 1941 and my gran died in 1992.
Regards
Maggie

Based on the information above, his Army number was 16919 and his service record has survived. You can find it on FindMyPast: https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBM%2FWO363-4%2F7408724%2F33%2F687
His wife's name was given as Ann Jane Davies and they had a daughter Ruth born 5 Feb either 1911 or 1916 (writing is unclear). During the war the family was living at 1 Cwnrae St East Moors, Cardiff.

According to his service record he was married at Aber[?]llefane, Corris on 17 June 1911
Added. Looking at the map the village (hamlet?) is actually Aberllefenni.
Looks like this might have been the old chapel:

Thank you SO much to Andy and Rosie for all your help.

I now know SO much more about Ernest and his family in Wales - and you've opened up new avenues for me in my research.

Thank you again
Maggie
