Stuart, if the friend you are helping is very keen, then really some money needs to be spent in order to make a true identification and progress further.

It is not much use gainig information about the woman in the marriage we are discussing unless there is certainty that it is the right man.

A copy of the man's service record can be got from National Archives Australia.  It will contain relevant personal information.
https://reftracker.naa.gov.au/reft100.aspx?pmi=7117292072215984527

A Victorian marriage certificate costs $22 and will download fror viewing immediately upon payment.

The marriage certificate will contain a good deal of information if completed truthfully.

I can locate no references at all to Keith Wolfe and his wife Alberta Jean after 1951

Possibility for Alberta (and it might explain why she can't be found on the birth index):

Alberta Jean COMPT b abt 1924, d 23 Sep 1997,
buried Frankston (https://billiongraves.com/grave/Alberta-Jean-Matherson/26579147)
X
Edward Christian MATHERSON (MATTHISON) b 1900 Carlton,
d 12 Jun 1977 Mount Eliza (DC:# 13764/1977), buried Frankston,
son of Percy COMPT (FYI No father's name on BC) & Amelia MATTHISON
(Something fishy going on here! ... Was Edward Matherson the same person as Edward Compt?)

-
Seeemingly at least 3 sons, One of them is:
William MATHERSON b abt 1955 Carlton, d 1976 Frankston (DC:# 25986/1976)

I believe you have nailed it in terms of the fate of Alberta Compt Wolfe, the implications for William Matherson seem very much as you suggest as ...."fishy" as per his death (DC:# 25986/1976).
Edward Christian seems to have lived a life switching between identities.  I'd say Keith Wolfe extracted himself from the environment as I can now located Alberta in her new identity on electoral rolls.
Thank you for your eyes, and time.  Very much appreciated.
Cheers
Stuart

Well, It is my theory that Keith WOLFE is one of the farming WOLFE family of Bornholm Albany /WA.

There were a large group of men there who enlisted in WW2 and their digitised records can be seen on the National Archives search.

Keith does not appear on the Electoral Roll there with the others until 1951, though if he was born in 1911, he was eligible to vote much earlier.

I think Keith was in Victoria and married to Alberta.  After the war, he had a "change of heart" and returned to WA.

He married there to Mollie Elsie   by 1958.

.....farming WOLFE family of Bornholm Albany....
Thanks Sue, I did wonder, however there is a disparity in ages, Bornholm Keith passed away in 2019 aged 90, making a birth year circa 1928/1929 which sort of precludes marrying Alberta Cpmpt in 1943.
Thanks for looking, very much appreciated.
