Marjory McDonald b abt 1797 Glen Urquhart
« on: Wednesday 09 August 23 12:37 BST (UK) »
Hi

Looking for birth of Marjory/Mary/May McDonald.  Parents possibly Hugh McDonald and Isabella Fraser.

Place of birth obtained from 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census.

Married Andrew Cowie 28 May 1827, Millburn, Inverness.  Andrew Cowie, Grieve to Mr Welch.

Died 10 Dec 1883 at 11 Charles Street, Inverness, aged 86years.

Have searched Scotland's People but unfortunately have not come up with this birth.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What does “Grieve to Mr Welch” mean please?

A grieve is a farm overseer, so presumably Mr Welch was the tenant farmer, or landowner he worked for.

William Welsh (independent) appears in the 1851 census at Millburn, near Inverness.

In 1851 he is described as J. P. and landed proprietor and the address is given as Millburn House.

Two birth/ baptisms for Andrew, I guess the first died. The parents do not fit the naming pattern but not all did, this would need more research.

COWAN   ANDREW   JAMES COWAN/ANNE SMITH    29/11/1790   HADDINGTON
COWAN   ANDREW   JAMES COWAN/ANNE SMITH    19/06/1793   HADDINGTON

1881 Craigside Lodge Gordon Terrace, Inverness, Isabella and others on census.

Marjory   Cowie   Head   Widow     83   1798   -   Invernessshire, Scotland
Margaret   Cowie   Daughter   single 47   1834   Lodging house keeper, Dores, Invernessshire

Based on Carole’s post this birth/baptism is more likely.

MCDONALD   MARJORY   DONALD MCDONALD/JEAN FRASER    20/08/1801    INVERNESS

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thank you to everyone for your replies.

Marjory's parents were named on her death certificate as Hugh McDonald and Isabella Fraser.

The information was given by her son, Hugh(b1831 Inverness) living in Edinburgh and perhaps incorrect.

Andrew Cowie b Haddington East Lothian from 1851 Census.

I will keep searching!
