children of John Spall & Eleanor (nee Browes) - Debenham
« on: Friday 11 August 23 00:54 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm having problems in finding baptisms for the children of John Spall & Eleanor (nee Browes).

John & Eleanor married in Debenham 8-9-1843 and had the following children;

Emily              born 20-11-1843
Arthur                "    23-5-1846
Mary Ann           "   15-2-1851
Charles              "   17-4-1849 (bapt. 23-4-1854 Debenham)

I have the transcripts for Debenham (ex Suffolk FHS) and apart from Charles none of the others appear.

I'm wondering if they could have been bapt. in a non-conformist  chapel but these records I can't seem to find anywhere. Iv'e looked on And...y.  F/Search and FindMyPast without success.
Can anyone please give some ideas where I can search, please?

I have the birth certs. for all of the above.

Many thanks in advance.

Alan

Not all children were baptised - even within the same family.

Presume you mean 1854 - which means Charles was 5yrs old before he was baptised so perhaps they didn’t consider baptism a necessity.  Just a thought - he was school age so possibly something to do with the school??

Agreed have come across that myself with half of one family being baptised and the other half not.

Hi all,
Thanks for your replies; I agree that not all children were baptised.

In the case of John Spall, (whose 1st wife  was  Sarah Keen - died 1842) 4 of his 5 children were bapt. in Tacket Street Independent chapel in Debenham. The 5th son  Jonathon was born about 1838 not found.

He married a 2nd time to Eleanor Browse and of the 6 children I know of,  I have only found a baptism for Charles in Debenham 1854.

jonw65; I was not aware of those entries so thank you very much - I must have missed them along the line when searching.
