Can you estimate a date for Robt Osborn

Hello,

Hoping you might have an approximate year based on his clothing etc. This is Robt Osborn of Lanark. One Robert 1879-1966 was the son of James b 1848-1902. James was the son of another Robert 1813-1884 who was the son of Robert 1786-1870 Braehead, who was the son of Robert 1750-1826 Craigie. I am trying to determine which Robert sat for this portrait.

Thanks Carol, narrowing it down to 1860’s, Robert born 1813 would be age 47- 50s, he died in 1884; and Robert born 1786 in Braehead would be in his 70’s, he died in 1870. I don’t know if this is a 50 year old or a 70 year old man.

I am going to say he is in his 70's.
Remebering that a portraitist will always "make the best" of his subject.  So there may have been a slight touch of the flattering to look a little younger.

That is my impression too.
I would look for an artist's name on the portrait (perhaps below the mount?) to help dating.

The big bushy sideburns of Robert seem the fashion 1860's in America and would think same here.
