Looking for Elizabeth Gardner c1780s
« on: Friday 11 August 23 19:43 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm looking for an Elizabeth Gard(i)ner born in Devon in the 1780s. She married John Aldridge in Silverton in 1805.

It's been frustrating me for a while and this is something of a shot in the dark as I'm not sure where else to look. The 1841 and 1851 censuses are below. I've got a baptism for her in Knowstone 1787 but I'm not very confident of it. She says in the 1851 she was born in Cullompton in 1781. Any ideas I would be most grateful.

2nd generation - Fawcett, Elsbury, Sanders, Aldridge
3rd - as above, Hutchison, Babb, Enticott, Edwards
4th - as above, Turner, Bater, Marshall, Webb, Chick, Cottey, Tozer, Rowland
5th - as above, Broomfield, Fry, Wood, Clark, Baker, Boyland, Lane, Bryant, Pearce, Carey, Bailey, Freeman, Hill

Good Morning
I'm struggling to find her too.
But if you look next door on the 1851 census
Samuel Gardiner 44 farmer of 84 acres Silverton
Mary 47 Row
Jane mother widow 81 annuitant Biddiford
Sarah May 12 Silverton
James 10
Robert 4
Elizabeth Aldridge 32 gen servant Butterleigh
Joseph Hucker 15 ag lab Buckleigh

The 1841 census is the same Jane 70 farmer y ,James 1 again next door

Jane's husband is a James Gardener  married Poughill 3.4.1798 to Jane Badcock.
Possible burial Silverton 1777-10.7.1832 And a Will 1835(which has survived apparently ref 1078/IRW/G/53)

This fits with a baptism at Butterleigh
James s of Thomas and Elizabeth Gardiner of Bradninch 18th May 1777

Older brother James 30 Sep 1770-27.2.1774 and Thomas born 23 July bapt 16.11.1767 agin from Bradninch.
The couple married at Bradninch 23 April 1784.
Thomas and Elizabeth Vinicombe
Burials 16.10.1825 age 89 for Thomas and Elizabeth 11.6.1804 both at Butterleigh.
But they are both given as of Cullompton which where Elizabeth says she was born in 1781.

I still can't find latter children after 1777.

First daughter Jane so if they followed naming patterns her mother would be Jane.

The 1835 will can be seen here
 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939F-5H3Z-BG?i=1749&cat=573927

(He died 5 Jul 1833.) It doesn't help with Elizabeth, as far as I can see.

There's also an 1806 will for a different James Gardiner of Silverton. Death Duty abstract available from Discovery. He leaves everything to his brother's son James and that James's son James Gardiner the younger. Which fits with him being the brother of Thomas as suggested by ciderdrinker.

The obvious place to look next for Elizabeth's baptism is Bradninch, but the earlier registers for there don't seem to be online, except for the marriages. Familysearch have the BTs but they don't cover the right period. They don't seem to have filmed the PRs at all, not just not available on line. GENUKI have a transcript by Elizabeth Howard of the baptisms 1785-90, just missing the period wanted. You might have to go to the Devon Archives.
