Identify British Army Regiment from photo (late 1940s?)
« on: Saturday 12 August 23 17:07 BST (UK) »
I’d be very grateful for some help to identify my late Uncle George Smith’s regiment from the attached photo which I think is late 1940s (?). My late Mum told me he was involved with the Gurkhas and a cousin remembers the same from his late Mum, also that he was involved with training in some way.

Also I’m not sure about the medal he’s wearing- could it be a military MBE?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Smith Elgin, Skye of Curr, Speyside
Cumming Speyside
McQueen Speyside
Gentleman Hawick
McPhee Lanarkshire

It looks like the general cap badge of  an officer. The medal probably an MBE, unfortunately it is not in colour because the edge and centre stripe of the ribbon is silver for the MBE  and gold for the OBE to match the medal.

I can't help much with the capbadge, but I can say he's a Warrant Officer class1 (Regimental Sergeant Major), not an officer. As such he would have been awarded the MBE (military).
Going back to the capbadge, it doesn't appear to have any Gurkha connection as their capbadges usually feature crossed Kukris (first image below). It seems to feature a five pointed star surrounded by laurel leaves and surmounted by a George VI crown. A five pointed star is most unusual, so maybe it's some device that looks like a star. I don't think it's the 10th Battalion the Paddington Rifles, although it's similar (second image). Hope scrimnet will pop in soon and help you out.

Calleva,

I'm assuming you don't yet have his service documents. In case you aren't aware, you can order them from the MOD. It's not essential to have his number or regiment, although it clearly helps to identify the right person, especially as his name is Smith.

That is definitely a bit left field.

Thanks to the find by Shaun, his MBE appeared in Supplement 37598 page 2778 (13 June) of the Gazette edition dated 4 June 1946.
